Sidewalk Ration Adding Effectively Reduces Traffic Jam

Jakarta Provincial Government prefers to add the sidewalk ratio rather and add road ratio. Adding the road ratio is not the solution overcoming traffic jam.

Jakarta Governor, Basuki T. Purnama said this way is also applied in cities in Europe. Starting this year, Dept. of Bina Marga conducts the pedestrian widening. One of the pilot projects is at Jalan Jatibaru, Gambir, Central Jakarta.

“Do not criticize too much. It’s impossible adding the road ratio. Vehicles will remain increase yearly,” he said, Friday (9/23).

Later on, all sidewalk in Jakarta will has width 1.5-5 meters. If it is impossible, sidewalk will prepare space for street vendors too.

“Our main focus is adding sidewalk ratio for pedestrian,” he added.
